The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire a student assistant, in a learning capacity, under close supervision by Senior Transportation Engineer, in a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist Project Managers (PM) and Project Manager Assistant (PMA) with monitoring and tracking annual delivery of projects within the District's Highway Maintenance and Minor B programs utilizing various databases and software applications.

Conditions of Employment

This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.

Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. Prerequisites

Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list.

Students must be enrolled in at least six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.

Work Schedule

F lexible workdays and work hours, Monday -- Friday, between 8 AM -- 5 PM. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.

Additional Work Schedule

Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday -- Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, summer).

Compensation

$18.27 -- $24.62 per hour.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
  • Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term. Must have a valid CA Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist the Project Manager (PM) and PM Assistant (PMA) with monitoring and tracking annual delivery of projects within the District's Highway Maintenance and Minor B programs utilizing various databases and software applications, including project management software; Project Resources and Scheduling Management (PRSM) and Open Work Bench (OWB) to develop, edit, and update project workplans, track the life cycle of a project, and generate the workload needs of the District. Produce resource, task assignment, and status reports for monitoring project cost and progress for Project Manager utilizing databases, reporting tools, and software currently used by the Department.
  • In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist the PM and PMA with running project reports and analyst for potential issues and recommend corrections as needed: Workplan Error Report (daily), Workplan Status Reports (weekly) and review for potential issues and corrections.
  • In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist the PM and PMA with updating and maintaining accurate data in Asset Management Tool.
  • In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist the PM and PMA with resourcing functional units with hours for time charging as requested by PM or PMA. In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist Contract Managers with preparing and monitoring various contracts, purchase orders, and credit card (CalCard) procurement packages.

Physical Requirements

Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers and scanners with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Working Conditions

Work will primarily be performed in an office environment and with 10% field work.

Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and uneven terrain. May require occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, or climbing as part of field duties.

W ill be required to interact with many people. It is important that the Student has the ability to work with others in a cooperative manner and be able to adjust rapidly to new situations warranting attention and resolution involving individual differences in the workforce.

May be required to lift objects up to 50 pounds and occasional bending, stooping, and climbing. Must be ability to operate a motor vehicle upwards of 4 hours away from the office.
