Must have:

- We require a doctorate in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline, or a masters degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field with at least 8 years of post-doctoral professional experience for doctorate holders or 10 years of post-masters experience in electric power systems. - We require 8+ years of proven power system engineering experience across at least three of the following areas: high-penetration renewable energy systems with power electronics interfaces, electrical network modeling, transmission or distribution planning and optimization, advanced devices such as HVDC, FACTS, storage, electric vehicles or grid-forming inverters, control and optimization technologies, and machine learning applications for power systems. - We value experience leading large, multi-million-dollar programs with multiple partners and stakeholders as a principal investigator. - We seek familiarity with product development, customer needs, and the competitive landscape. - We prefer candidates with patents and publications in power system modeling, simulation, optimization, control, or artificial intelligence. - We prefer strong hands-on experience with distribution simulation tools such as OpenDSS, GridLAB-D, or cymdist, and analytical platforms such as PSCAD, PSS-E, PSLF, MAPS, or DIgSILENT. - We value experience implementing control algorithms and analytics in control hardware or energy/distribution management systems within hardware-in-the-loop laboratory environments using RTDS, Opal-RT, or similar platforms. - We prefer background in alternative energy and distributed generation, including wind, PV, fuel cells, and combined heat and power applications. - We value a solid foundation in control theory, especially for power and energy systems. - We prefer experience applying machine learning to power systems. - We seek a global mindset, strong customer orientation, and excellent analytical ability. - We expect strong interpersonal skills, humility, candor, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. - We value experience leading teams, including scheduling, milestone management, technical reviews, and funding tracking. - We need the ability to communicate effectively with senior leadership. - We look for a demonstrated ability to turn innovative concepts into prototypes and/or commercial products. - We require legal authorization to work in the United States. - We require a current or active Secret Clearance, with the ability to obtain Top Secret clearance; U.S. citizenship is required for clearance eligibility. - We require willingness to work from our Niskayuna, NY office. - We require willingness to travel at least 2 weeks per year.

Responsibilities:


  • We conduct advanced research in electric power system technologies that improve the reliability and efficiency of power generation, transmission, and distribution. - We lead technology development across areas such as renewable integration, WAMS, HVDC, distribution automation, power system protection, and microgrids. - We collaborate with internal teams in electrical machines, power electronics, electrical propulsion, and energy storage to address system-level challenges. - We work with other research groups to identify how power system advances can strengthen our products and platforms. - We analyze system requirements and translate them into enhancements for existing offerings and new solutions. - We lead multidisciplinary teams and provide technical expertise in real-time modeling, simulation, network modeling, system analysis, protection, transient stability, grid codes, economic dispatch, and HVDC/FACTS. - We help shape new proposal areas with our businesses, government agencies, universities, and national laboratories. - We contribute to proposal development as principal investigators or team members and participate in business technology and strategy discussions. - We help develop grid-control algorithms, including tools that enable distributed energy resources to support the grid and improve inverter interconnection. - We create methods to assess the grid impact of distributed energy resources and adapt distribution automation and management systems for DER operation. - We build simulation models for grid configurations and assets and run multiple simulation types, including direct sequence and EMT studies. - We develop algorithms and solutions that strengthen grid resilience against cyber-physical disruptions. - We perform analytical work to meet or exceed customer expectations and deliverables. - We identify and evaluate new technology, product, and service opportunities. - We communicate findings clearly through written reports and presentations that explain analyses, solutions, and business value. - We keep our organization connected to emerging technologies and market trends. - We participate in intellectual property assessments and stay alert to competing and disruptive technologies.
