To facilitate the growth of Rakuten Insight's business in China, we are establishing a standalone system within the China region, which requires building a new local team to manage its development and operation. We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Backend Application Engineer to play a key role in the development, maintenance, and operational support of this critical system. The ideal candidate will primarily work on applications built with Java and the SpringBoot framework. This role offers a unique opportunity to gain invaluable experience in a dynamic, global team. This position requires strong technical proficiency, excellent communication skills, and the ability to effectively collaborate with our global teams. Responsibilities:
- Design and develop new features using Java and the SpringBoot framework
- Conduct production operations, including deploying developed features, on a China Public Cloud Service
- Support Program Managers in analyzing requirements and conducting estimation and scheduling for development tasks
- Proactively monitor the production environment on a China Public Cloud Service to ensure stability, performance, and security
- Perform Lifecycle Management (LCM) tasks, including upgrading versions for middleware, frameworks (e.g., SpringBoot), and other critical components
- Undertake maintenance development tasks related to the production environment on the China Public Cloud Service, ensuring its long-term health and efficiency
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to the production environment on the China Public Cloud Service, ensuring minimal downtime and impact.
- Participating in the investigation, analysis, and resolution of application security incidents, ensuring timely resolution and documentation of incidents
- Regularly tracking new security threats, vulnerabilities, and technological advancements, ensuring that application/infrastructure security measures remain robust
- Maintaining Clear Data ownership and keeping the data permissions and accessibility clear and up to date
- Creating, Maintaining and Documenting regular production maintenance processes, such as data extraction requests, recovery procedures and other related tasks
- Keeping our code base clear and up to date following company standards Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- More than 5 years of professional experience in web application development.
- Solid experience in backend application development utilizing Java and the SpringBoot framework.
- Proven experience in system design and architecture.
- Experienced in security best practices throughout the software development lifecycle (SDLC), including secure coding guidelines.
- Familiarity with Application Security domain such as SAST, DAST, SCA, IaC Scanning, Container Scanning, or CSPM
- Practical experience in operating and maintaining systems on China Public Cloud Services (e.g., Alibaba Cloud).
- Familiarity with Linux systems, including competence in using command-line tools for system navigation, file manipulation, process management, and basic shell scripting. A strong understanding of Linux-based environments for server deployment and management.
- Proficiency in database technologies, including experience with SQL databases such as MySQL, MariaDB.
- Knowledge of version control systems, especially Git.
- Business-level English proficiency with excellent written and verbal communication skills for effective collaboration with international teams.
- Strong "Get Things Done" mindset with a sense of ownership in a multitasking environment. Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in system design and implementation utilizing a microservices architecture.
- Basic knowledge and practical experience in containerization technologies, particularly Docker.
- Experience in designing and implementing scalable and high-performance systems.
- Experience working effectively in a global team environment, collaborating with diverse technical and non-technical professionals across different regions.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and tools using Jenkins.
- Experience with message queuing systems such as Kafka or RabbitMQ.
- Understanding of web security and zero trust principles.
- Ability to identify inefficiencies and recommend operational enhancements.
- Japanese communication skills.
